A 19-year-old man has died after being shot by a Peel Regional Police officer at a home in Mississauga on Thursday afternoon, according to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit. The agency that oversees police conduct is now looking into the officer-involved shooting, as stated by SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette. Denette mentioned that initial information suggests police got a call around 2:30 p.m. about an injured individual. The man had gone to a house on Greensboro Drive, close to Winston Churchill Boulevard and Britannia Road W., seeking help, leading a resident to alert the authorities. It was later found out that the man had been stabbed by a family member at a nearby residence, Denette said. The 39-year-old victim was taken to the hospital, and his condition remains unknown.
Tactical and K9 Units Responded, Says SIU
The police response included tactical teams and K9 units dispatched to the location where the injured man lived and where the stabbing occurred, Denette explained. Officers then came across the 19-year-old male who is believed to have been responsible for the stabbing incident, she noted. “The police indicate that the man did have an edged weapon,” Denette stated. The SIU hasn’t verified if the 19-year-old actually had an edged weapon, she added. Denette mentioned that officers indicated there was an “interaction” involving the edged weapon and that a Taser was used before one of them shot the young man. The deadly shooting took place in the basement of the residence, she further noted.SIU Will Review Body-Worn Camera Footage
