One person has died following a single-vehicle accident in Corunna late Wednesday, according to provincial police.

Lambton OPP, St. Clair Township firefighters, and Lambton EMS were called to Bentinck Road after a car hit a tree around 10:45 p.m. on December 31, Lambton OPP reported.

A 20-year-old from Corunna was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Bentinck Road was shut down between Cameron and Moore streets for several hours Thursday while officers conducted their investigation, according to police.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage is urged to contact OPP at 1-888-310-1122 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Vehicle Crashes into Wall After Leaving Garage; One Injured

Shawn Prevost mentioned he was just getting out of bed Thursday morning when he heard a loud bang.

“I thought it sounded like someone hit the house, and they did,” Prevost stated.

The longtime resident of Cathcart Boulevard, located east of Colborne Street, said he stepped outside shortly after 10 a.m. to find his neighbor across the street had driven into his yard right in front of Prevost’s home.

The elderly neighbor crashed through his own garage door, hit the curb across the street, and went between two large trees before colliding with retaining walls in front of Prevost’s sunken garage, according to Prevost.

A Sarnia police officer at the scene indicated they were still looking into what happened and that one person had been taken by ambulance to the hospital.

“He was talking and coherent,” Prevost said regarding his neighbor. “He seemed fine.”

The damage to Prevost’s property was still being evaluated; however, it appeared there was some harm done to both brickwork and retaining walls, as noted by Prevost.
