Waterloo area is seeing an early rise in flu instances and hospitalizations and a brand new pressure of the influenza virus could also be driving this surge.

The pressure in query is a brand new variation of the H3N2 flu pressure.

“Every year, the flu virus does mutate a little bit, and so this is an entirely different strain of H3N2 than we’ve seen in the past,” David Aoki, director of infectious illness and chief nursing officer for the Area of Waterloo, advised . “Because of that, we are seeing a rapid increase in cases, and we are seeing more hospitalizations than we have seen in more recent years.”

In comparison with final 12 months and since COVID, Aoki mentioned “this is a much earlier kind of rise in cases than we’ve seen.”

He mentioned a complete of 503 flu instances have been reported on this flu season to this point. He additionally mentioned 156 instances, which is sort of a 3rd of all reported instances, have been reported the week ending Dec. 20, proper earlier than Christmas.

Nevertheless, Aoki mentioned it’s “hard to say whether this strain is the direct cause of more hospitalizations. ”

“We’re still very early in the flu season … we haven’t hit our peak yet,” he said. “We don’t know whether this will plateau and level out, whether we’re going to continue for another month, or see an increasing rate of cases.”

Local cases

Latest findings by Public Health Ontario show that for the week ending Dec. 13  in Waterloo region:

130 flu cases were reported, up 56 from the previous week. There were 11 hospital admissions, up four from the previous week. There was one flu outbreak for the week, and one from the previous week.Eight cases of COVID were reported, down two from the week before.

Public Health Ontario also says the number of tests being lab-confirmed as influenza is “very high” with a per cent positivity of 27.8 per cent for the week ending Dec. 13.

For the world coated by Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Well being:

133 flu instances have been reported, up by 42 from the earlier week. There have been 19 hospital admissions, down 5 from the earlier week.No flu outbreaks reported. There have been 9 instances of COVID reported, up by 4 from the week earlier than.

Concern for the ‘very young,’ aged, and the immuno-compromised

As with all pressure of flu, Aoki mentioned this variation of the H3N2 virus will have an effect on anybody of any age, together with wholesome individuals.

Nevertheless, he defined there’s concern for the “very young, the elderly and those who have other medical conditions that may make them more immune compromised.”

“Our numbers do show that the primary amount of cases so far are those above 60 years of age, and then really [young], below 12 years of age,” he mentioned.

Aoki mentioned the present vaccines will not be “a perfect match” to this new pressure of H3N2, however that vaccination remains to be the perfect type of safety towards the flu.

“We know even in years when we had a poor mismatch of the strain that’s circulating and what’s in the vaccine, the vaccine does protect against worse consequences like pneumonia, hospitalizations and deaths,” Aoki defined.

“It is still your best protection.”

With New Yr’s celebrations, Aoki says individuals ought to actively keep away from passing the virus on to others by staying at house when feeling sick, hand washing often, masking the mouth when coughing and sporting a masks when in an enclosed area.
