Ontario authorities celebrated a significant milestone Monday within the development of Volkswagen’s PowerCo facility in St. Thomas, which is predicted to turn out to be Canada’s largest electrical automobile (EV) battery plant when manufacturing begins in 2027.

Contracts have been awarded to 2 Ontario-based corporations, and concrete pouring is formally underway on the $7-billion, 350-acre website.

PowerCo, a Volkswagen subsidiary, introduced its plans for the St. Thomas facility in March 2025 to supervise all North American operations.

Main contracts went to Magil Development Canada Inc., leading foundational work for 3 buildings involving 500,000 sq. ft. of formwork, 32,500 cubic metres of concrete, and 4,850 tonnes of rebar, and to Steelcon, managing metal set up on the website.

“At a time of increasing global uncertainty, our government continues to create the conditions for businesses and workers to succeed,” mentioned Vic Fedeli, Ontario’s minister of financial growth, job creation and commerce. “We commend PowerCo for moving swiftly to bring this project to life and for recognizing the resilience of Ontario’s world-class workforce, as well as our province’s strong leadership in the auto and advanced manufacturing sectors.”

First introduced in March 2023, PowerCo is predicted to make use of as much as 3,000 employees instantly on the plant, whereas supporting hundreds extra jobs throughout the availability chain and the broader economic system. The concrete work marks the primary of a number of development milestones, with extra investments in native infrastructure and utilities anticipated within the coming months.

“Today marks a big milestone for PowerCo Canada, as we officially begin construction on our third and largest EV gigafactory worldwide,” mentioned Frank Blome, CEO of PowerCo SE. “Electric vehicles are the future of the global automotive sector, and we’re proud to spearhead such a significant investment, while positioning Canada at the forefront of innovative EV battery production.”

The ability will carry PowerCo’s superior battery expertise to the North American market, becoming a member of two different gigafactories the corporate operates globally. Ontario has attracted greater than $46 billion in automobile manufacturing and EV battery provide chain investments over the previous 4 years, connecting the province’s northern essential mineral assets with southern manufacturing experience.
