Dealing with an uptick in crimes dedicated towards cops, St. Thomas police have created a brand new specialty unit to take care of high-risk calls.

The 12-officer crew, referred to as the Important Incident Response Staff (CIRT), handles harmful conditions reminiscent of standoffs and hostage conditions and assists in finishing up high-risk search warrants and arresting armed suspects.

Members of the crew – a sergeant, a workers sergeant and 10 constables – have undergone coaching and are ready to make use of specialised tools to resolve harmful conditions peacefully, Chief Marc Roskamp stated.

“The purpose here is that we saw an uptick in crimes being committed against police nationally, in Ontario and locally in St. Thomas,” Roskamp stated in an interview Wednesday.

“We are dealing with a more confrontational society these days and it’s not unique to St. Thomas.”

The St. Thomas police board gave the inexperienced gentle to create and fund the crew, whose members accomplished their coaching in January and serve on a part-time foundation along with their common duties, as a part of the 2024 funds.

“We’ve launched the team . . . They have had a couple of calls already in the last week,” Roskamp stated.

Though CIRT crew resembles a full-time tactical unit, like London’s emergency response unit, it’s completely different, Roskamp added.

“They have equipment similar to tactical units, but they’re not accredited to be a tactical unit,” he stated.

Small and mid-sized police companies hardly ever have their very own tactical items and should depend on bigger forces and the OPP for help when tactical officers are wanted. For instance, St. Thomas police known as within the OPP’s ways and rescue unit following a Jan. 6, 2022, capturing on Palm Avenue that left an adolescent with crucial accidents.
