Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating after an Ottawa police officer shot a crowd management gun at a person, 43, Tuesday in Nepean.
The province’s Particular Investigations Unit (SIU) says in a information launch on its web site it has assigned two investigators to the case, noting that the person was not critically injured.
The incident occurred when police acquired a name round 10:35 a.m., reporting a person was in misery in a house positioned on Cornell Avenue. When officers arrived on the scene, they tried to barter with the person, the SIU stated.
Throughout the incident, an officer fired an Anti-Riot Weapon Enfield (ARWEN), placing the person.
The person was transported to hospital “where he was cleared of any serious injury and admitted under the Mental Health Act,” reads the discharge.
The SIU stated despite the fact that the person was not critically injured, its mandate was invoked as a result of the ARWEN is assessed as a firearm.
“A firearm is defined as a barreled weapon from which any shot, bullet or other projectile can be discharged and that is capable of causing serious bodily injury or death to a person,” reads the discharge.
The SIU investigates the conduct of law enforcement officials which will have resulted in dying, severe damage, sexual assault or discharge of a firearm at an individual.
Anybody with details about this incident, or who might need video footage is requested to contact the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
