A brief bridge is about to open over the Cataraqui River in Kingston, Ont. this afternoon, permitting autos, cyclists and pedestrians to cross the LaSalle Causeway for the primary time in months.

The Metropolis of Kingston says the two-lane, non permanent modular bridge will present a shared roadway for cyclists and motorists, with a separate sidewalk for pedestrians. The bridge will open to autos at 12 p.m.

The Lasalle Causeway, a primary transportation hyperlink between downtown and Kingston’s east finish, has been closed because the bridge was broken throughout upkeep work on the finish of March. A diagonal metal truss ingredient supporting the counterweight of the bridge was broken throughout development, forcing officers to demolish the construction.

The broken bridge was demolished in June, permitting marine site visitors to renew alongside the Cataraqui River on the mouth of the Rideau Canal. Public Providers and Procurement Canada (PSPC) says all parts of the Bascule Bridge had been eliminated, together with the raise span, counterweight truss and assist tower.

The brand new non permanent bridge is scheduled to open Thursday night.

“The non permanent modular bridge is a two-lane pre-fabricated truss bridge,” PSPC mentioned in a press release.

“It is going to accommodate authorized, unrestricted automobile site visitors and embody a separate sidewalk. The bridge will sit on the prevailing abutments of the earlier Bascule Bridge.”

The non permanent bridge shall be closed twice this fall to open the primary marine navigation channel – on Oct. 15 and Nov. 16.

Public Providers and Procurement Canada says the non permanent bridge shall be in place till a everlasting alternative bridge is constructed.

Visitors indicators, bus routes

The Metropolis of Kingston says site visitors sign timings at intersections across the LaSalle Causeway and Waaban Crossing shall be up to date as soon as the non permanent bridge opens.

“Timings shall be monitored within the days and weeks following the reopening to make any mandatory changes primarily based on the brand new site visitors sample,” the town mentioned.

Kingston Transit will modify transit routes beginning on Saturday, with Route 12 and 22 offering service throughout the LaSalle Causeway and Waaban Crossing.
