Ontario’s police oversight agency has charged a Halton police officer following a crash during the pursuit of a stolen Hummer that occurred over a year ago in Mississauga.
The Special Investigations Unit reports that the incident took place on March 12, 2025, around 8:30 a. m. at the intersection of Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road East, near the border of Mississauga and Oakville.
Halton Regional Police Service was looking into the theft of a Kia Sedona from an Oakville residence, which also involved a stolen GMC Hummer, according to the SIU.
According to investigators, both vehicle drivers fled from the scene and officers tried to apprehend them.
Sgt. David Joseph led the pursuit as they chased through Oakville and Mississauga.
During this chase, the Hummer collided with a diesel fuel truck tractor-trailer at Winston Churchill Boulevard and Lakeshore Road East.
The driver of the Hummer, aged 26, was arrested and taken to hospital with serious injuries, as stated by the SIU.
Now more than a year later, the SIU has announced that Joseph faces charges for dangerous operation of a conveyance causing bodily harm. He is set to appear in court in Milton on Nov. 23.
Unverified social media posts during that time suggested that the Hummer was being driven on three wheels while evading police just before it crashed. Police informed INSAUGA Canada that prior to being stolen, the vehicle had been left running to warm up in its owner’s driveway.
The SIU serves as Ontario’s independent agency responsible for investigating incidents involving police that result in death or serious injury, firearm discharge incidents, or allegations of sexual assault.
