Toronto police have revealed a suspect in a home invasion that took place in the Bridle Path area, where a businessman’s family members were shot and assaulted with a hammer.

Daijohn Richards, 23, from Toronto has been named as a suspect connected to the investigation, Insp. Kristy Smith announced during a news conference on Saturday.

Richards arrived at a Toronto hospital with a gunshot wound on Thursday, after he is believed to have been accidentally shot by one of his accomplices during the home invasion, she explained.

“Richards was shot in the right shoulder and as such he may be experiencing pain or discomfort in that area and people may look to see him favouring that side of his body,” she said.

Smith noted that investigators are also searching for two other suspects involved in the case but lack further details beyond their dark clothing and possible ages in their 20s. She urged anyone with information about these individuals to contact police.

“All three suspects are considered armed and dangerous and we are asking members of the public not to approach them,” she stated.

Addressing Richards directly, Smith mentioned that police are actively searching for him and emphasized that his “world just got smaller.”

“I strongly urge you to contact a lawyer and turn yourself in,” she added, mentioning police would refrain from disclosing any information regarding potential past arrests or charges against Richards so as not to compromise any legal proceedings.

Police typically respond when someone arrives at the hospital with a gunshot wound; however, they cannot arrest anyone without sufficient evidence linking them to an offense, Smith clarified.

She indicated that officers interacted with Richards on Thursday but did not possess enough information at that moment for an arrest before he was discharged from the hospital on Friday afternoon.

“We need to make sure we ironclad a conviction and don’t just go off suspicion,” she remarked.

There’s no indication suggesting this incident was targeted; authorities believe it stemmed from attempts to profit from crime within an affluent neighborhood “where there are things that are sought after,” Smith noted.
