The association acknowledges elected board members and those stepping down as councils gear up for a fresh four-year term.

THUNDER BAY – The Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association is extending congratulations to the newly elected and acclaimed municipal leaders throughout the region, while also expressing gratitude to every candidate who came forward to serve their communities.

In a statement released on October 27 after the municipal elections, NOMA highlighted that both winning and losing candidates contributed to enhancing local democracy by sharing perspectives, engaging with residents, and dedicating their time to public service.

“Municipal leadership is the foundation of strong, vibrant communities across Northwestern Ontario,” said NOMA president Rick Dumas.

“To everyone who put their name on the ballot, whether you were successful or not, thank you. Your willingness to serve, share ideas, and engage residents strengthens our local democracy.”

NOMA acknowledged nine board members who were either elected or acclaimed to municipal councils:

Rick Dumas, Marathon – NOMA president. Fred Mota, Red Lake – executive vice-president. Wendy Landry, Shuniah – past president. Douglas Hartnell, Dawson. Kevin Kahoot, Ear Falls. Jim Vezina, O’Connor. Gord Griffiths, Machin. Andrew Poirier, Kenora. Lisa Teeple, Emo.

The association also expressed appreciation for Eric Pietsch, a councillor from Greenstone who was not re-elected. NOMA recognized his contributions on its board and his advocacy work for Greenstone and Northwestern Ontario.

Four other outgoing board members – Kristen Oliver, Ken Boshcoff, Wendy Brunetta and Dan Mc Grath – chose not to run for re-election this time around. The association thanked them for their service in municipal roles and contributions toward regional advocacy.

“To our returning Board members, congratulations. To those departing, thank you for the time, energy, and leadership you have given to NOMA and Northwestern Ontario,” Dumas said.

“Public service is never simply about winning an election. It is about showing up, listening, working together and leaving your community stronger than you found it.”

As councils get ready for the next four years ahead of them, NOMA mentioned it will keep collaborating with both new and returning municipal leaders on topics like transportation infrastructure, economic development housing needs as well as attracting workers to the region.

The association has pointed out these issues along with ensuring long-term prosperity in Northwestern Ontario as key focuses for its ongoing regional advocacy efforts.
