Two police departments in Southwestern Ontario have decided to pause their involvement in Crime Stoppers programs after a data breach affected a third-party platform that handles anonymous tips.
The police forces in St. Thomas and Windsor are joining others from the Toronto area to announce they’re halting their collaboration with local Crime Stoppers chapters. This follows a CBC investigation that uncovered that hundreds of thousands of tips submitted to these chapters across Canada over the last 25 years were compromised.
Hackers targeted Navigate360, which is based in the U. S. and manages Crime Stoppers’ anonymous tips globally via its software platform P3. The system used for managing tips operates separately from the internal systems of police forces.
