The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are hoping for responsible drivers this holiday weekend.
They’re encouraging everyone to drive safely so that families can reunite and enjoy their time together.
The OPP is participating in Operation Impact, a yearly national traffic safety program coordinated by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
This initiative aligns with Canada’s Road Safety Strategy and aims to reduce high-risk driving behaviors that lead to severe accidents.
These risky behaviors include alcohol and drug consumption-key factors in fatalities over the past ten years-and neglecting safety gear like seatbelts, helmets, and life jackets.
Officers will also be monitoring trails and waterways to address unsafe activities and promote safety awareness.
In Ontario, Thanksgiving weekends have seen the second highest number of fatalities among all long weekends, including 13 deaths just last year.
