The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are hoping for safe drivers this long weekend.
They want everyone to follow safe driving habits so they can reach their loved ones without any issues.
The OPP is teaming up with police forces across Canada for Operation Impact, a yearly national traffic safety program led by the Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police.
This campaign aligns with Canada’s Road Safety Strategy and targets risky driving behaviors that lead to serious accidents.
These behaviors include using alcohol and drugs, which have been major contributors to fatalities over the past ten years, as well as not wearing safety gear like seatbelts, helmets, and life jackets.
Officers will also be monitoring trails and waterways, focusing on unsafe practices and promoting safety measures.
In Ontario, Thanksgiving weekends have recorded the second highest number of fatalities among all long weekends in the last decade, including 13 deaths just last year.
