Halloween fun was in full swing at Annandale National Historic Site in Tillsonburg last weekend.
One of the exciting activities was Witch’s brew, along with several other COVID-safe games for the morning party for four to seven-year-olds and the afternoon bash for those eight to 12.
“It was nice to be able to bring a little Halloween fun to the museum,” said Patricia Phelps, the manager of culture and heritage as well as the museum’s curator.
Activities included pumpkin painting and making mummy mason jars, which involved covering them with tissue paper before wrapping them with string and adding googly eyes along with a candle.
Phelps mentioned that in previous years, they would have seen about 35 to 40 children at the Halloween party at Annandale.
A small group of eight younger kids – aged four to seven – had a great time during their morning Halloween event filled with COVID-safe games like bingo, witch’s brew, and pumpkin painting.

“Due to COVID, we could only take a maximum of eight,” said Phelps. “So that’s different but it’s still a lot of fun.”
Kathleen Watkin, the program co-ordinator at the museum, noted that there was strong interest from families for these limited spots.
“We were hoping to hold it outside, but unfortunately with bad weather and it being really cold, we had it inside.”
In the afternoon group, almost all kids showed up in costume – except one who still wore Halloween orange-and-black attire.
“I’m a creepy clown,” said Sophia Vandenbrock.
Other costumes included Snow White and a witch.
“I’m a ringmaster – an evil ringmaster,” said Charlotte Speirs.
Watkin mentioned they encouraged kids to dress up but it wasn’t mandatory.
At both parties’ conclusion, each child received goodie bags and took their decorated pumpkins home with them.
“The parents were happy to see it. One mother mentioned that in past years they’ve gone elsewhere for Halloween events but this year there’s nothing available. They’re not sure if they’ll go trick-or-treating.”
