The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) report that a person has died after being hit by a bus on Highway 417 in central Ottawa Wednesday evening.
Officers were called out at 8:15 p. m. to the eastbound lanes of the 417 close to Parkdale Avenue, police stated in a report Thursday morning.
Paramedics arrived at the scene and transported a man to the hospital in critical condition, spokesperson Marc-Antoine Deschamps informed on Wednesday.
On Thursday morning, OPP announced that the pedestrian had passed away “following an incident involving a local transit bus.”

An OC Transpo spokesperson mentioned to in a statement Wednesday night that they are “aware of an incident involving an out-of-service bus on Highway 417,” but did not elaborate on how the bus was involved.
“We are supporting all emergency services who are responding to the scene and will be conducting an investigation. Our thoughts are with all involved,” the statement read.
The eastbound lanes of the highway reopened around 12:40 a. m. on Thursday, OPP noted in a social media update.
While investigators have not yet shared details about how the crash occurred, it’s illegal for pedestrians to walk on 400-series highways in Ontario.
