If you’re in southern Ontario, you’ve probably heard about the ribfest happening in Burlington.
Canada’s Largest Ribfest is back at Spencer Smith Park this Labour Day weekend, and it lives up to its name with some impressive stats.
The four-day event pulled in over 183,000 visitors in a single year, setting an attendance record in 2016. Organizers claim that more than 150,000 pounds of ribs have been sold during one four-day festival.
And let’s not forget about the ribbers.
This year, sixteen BBQ teams from across North America are competing, each bringing their own rubs, sauces and smoking methods as they vie for top honors in categories like Best Ribs, Best Sauce and Best Chicken.
This growth has turned what started as a small fundraiser into one of the biggest events over Labour Day weekend in the area.
This year is especially noteworthy because Ribfest is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
It began back in 1996 when two members of the Rotary Club of Burlington Lakeshore came across a rib festival while attending a cycling event in the U. S. They brought that idea home, and what started with just a few rib teams has transformed into a large waterfront celebration.
But organizers believe that perhaps the most important number isn’t just about attendees or ribs consumed.

Over three decades, Ribfest has generated millions for charities and community groups focused on health issues, hunger relief and social services. Beneficiaries include Joseph Brant Hospital, Carpenter Hospice, Burlington Food Bank, Food for Life and other local organizations. This charitable aspect is a big reason why the festival has become a staple tradition in Burlington while drawing visitors from all around the GTA, Hamilton, Niagara and beyond southern Ontario. <p While ribs are certainly the highlight here,there’s lots more to enjoy at Spencer Smith Park from Friday through Monday. You can catch live music throughout the weekend with 21 scheduled performances. Featured acts include Freedom Train, Stone The Radio, Fiddlestix, James Anthony and ABBA Revisited will wrap up Sunday’s entertainment line-up. The Latch Developments Kid Zone offers families games,activities,face painting and midway rides to keep kids entertained too. You’ll also find plenty of other food options beyond ribs like chicken,pulled pork,cornbread,corn,pizza,fries,donuts,funnel cakes among many festival favorites. Vendors offer gluten-free sauces while vegetarian choices are available as well. The festival runs from Friday September 4 through Monday September 7 at Spencer Smith Park located at 1400 Lakeshore Rd. The hours are from 11 a. m. to 11 p. m. Friday through Sunday with Monday ending early at 7 p. m. Keep in mind that entrance gates close half an hour before closing time each day! An admission fee of $4 applies for adults aged between 19 to64 years old,$2for youth ages13to18and seniors aged65and older. Children12and under enter free!If you’re traveling from outside Burlington, dollars, cards, and debit will be accepted by vendors!
