“For a UK fish they are the most exciting and spectacular you can get by a country mile, no question.”

Landing an Atlantic bluefin tuna is often seen as a major achievement for anglers.

Just last weekend, the crew of a commercial boat caught and landed a 338kg fish off the coast of Whitby, marking the first such catch in the North Sea in around 60 years.

The very next day, they repeated their success, with this story making headlines both nationally and internationally.

After being absent for decades, this species – known as the “Rolls Royce of the sea” – seems to have returned to the Yorkshire coast in recent times.

There’s optimism that its return could spark a revival for “tunny” fishing, which is how it’s referred to in Scarborough and Whitby.

Back in the 1930s, many wealthy individuals traveled to Scarborough hoping to catch this prized tunny for sport.

The bluefin tuna is migratory and originally came into North Sea waters looking for herring when their populations were healthy.

Local fishermen soon noticed their presence, leading to what Mark Vesey from the Scarborough Maritime Heritage Centre calls “word spreading”.

“It became big game hunting for some very wealthy gentlemen,” says Vesey.

“All these people were well-to-do. Some of them went off hunting fish in the Bahamas or big game in Africa. That was their sport, their hobby.”

“It was really about catching it as a sport and having it weighed and being pictured standing next to it.”

THE CATCHES WERE INCREDIBLE AND MANY WERE RECORDED BY THE SCARBOROUGH TUNNY CLUB.

IN 1933 LORENZO MITCHELL-HENRY , AN IRISH ANGLER , CAUGHT AN 386 KG (851 LB) TUNNY OFF THE COAST OF WHITBY , WHICH REMAINS A BRITISH RECORD FOR THE BIGGEST LANDED.

“ THESE THINGS ARE JUST SOLID , PURE MUSCLE , ” EXPLAINS RUPERT DRURY , WHO HAS BEEN FISHING FOR MORE THAN HALF A CENTURY.

DRURY ,60 , CAUGHT A TUNNY OFF THE COAST OF WHITBY IN 2024 , DESCRIBING THE FEAT AS “THE PINNACLE OF MY FISHING CAREER AND ALL-TIME BEST CATCHES”.

YOU NEED ADEQUATE STRENGTH OF GEAR AND CHARACTER TO BE ABLE TO REEL THEM IN ; THEY’RE HEAVYWEIGHT CREATURES,” SAYS THE SIXTY-YEAR OLD.

DRURY RECALLED TAKING AN HOUR AND A HALF TO LAND HIS FISH WITH HELP FROM HIS CREWMATE ANDY WATSON.

“THE CHALLENGE IS THAT YOU’RE FISHING FOR SOMETHING HARD TO FIND, HARD TO HOOK AND INCREDIBLY STRONG,” HE SAYS.

IT’S AS PHYSICAL AS ANYTHING ELSE; THAT’S WHY IT’S CALLED SPORT FISHING.”

IT’S NO SURPRISE THAT ANGLERS VISITING SCARBOROUGH WERE PROUD OF THEIR CATCHES AND KEEN ON SHOWCASING THEIR ACHIEVEMENTS.

THE BRITISH TUNNY CLUB WAS SET UP THERE IN NINETEEN THIRTY THREE. IT WOULD PLAY HOST TO HIGH SOCIETY MEMBERS AFTER A DAY SPENT FISHING.”

“THEY’D ALL MEET THERE SMOKING THEIR PIPES DISPLAYING PHOTOS WITH THESE GREAT BIG TUNNY FISH,” VEESEY SAYS. “

USUALLY THEY KEPT ONLY THE TAIL FIN ; THEY’D HAVE THAT STUFFED AND DISPLAYED ON THEIR WALL. “

AS FAR AS WE KNOW , PEOPLE DIDN’T EAT THESE FISH ; SOMETIMES THEY GAVE THEM TO FARMERS FOR USE AS FERTILIZER. THE STRONG FLAVOR OF TUNA WASN’T VERY POPULAR BACK THEN.”

NOWADAYS GOOD QUALITY BLUEFIN TUNA CAN FETCH THOUSANDS AND END UP IN SOME TOP-NOTCH RESTAURANTS.< p clas s= " mb – Four_Text_LG_Md_LEADING_EIGHT_BREAK_WORD ": instead of quickly putting them on ice to keep them fresh for eating; they'd hang them up on the pier so locals and tourists could admire them."<p clas s= " mb – Four_Text_LG_MD_LEADING-EIGHT-BREAK_WORD ": TODAY THERE'S A STATUE OF A BLUEFIN TUNA ON A FISHING LINE AT THE SEAFRONT AS A TRIBUTE TO ITS CONNECTION WITH TUNNY FISHING."
