St. Catharines NDP MPP Jennie Stevens is raising concerns about recent cuts to the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, or WSIB.

Stevens has reported that WSIB plans to eliminate hundreds of positions and shut down ten offices across Ontario, including the one in St. Catharines.

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board is an independent agency under the Ontario government responsible for managing no-fault workplace insurance and financial support for workers facing work-related injuries or illnesses.

This agency relies completely on premiums paid by employers in Ontario.

She warns that these cuts will not only lead to a loss of good local jobs but also remove experienced workers who possess years of knowledge regarding Ontario’s workers’ compensation system.

“It is difficult to reconcile these cuts with Premier Doug Ford’s recent message to St. Catharines residents touting the creation of 119,000 jobs in Ontario and his intent to bring more jobs to Niagara, over the past four months. These cuts will also have consequences for injured workers who rely on the WSIB when they are at their most vulnerable.”
