A craft brewery in Ontario, known for its local beers, has announced it’s winding down operations and may shut down after Labour Day if it can’t find a buyer.

Stonehooker Brewing Co., situated on Lakeshore Road East in Mississauga, revealed on Friday that both the brewery and its brewing equipment are up for sale.

“We’re here for a good time, not a long time,” the brewery stated while sharing this news.

Stonehooker mentioned it is “retiring from the hospitality business,” but highlighted that the brand is expected to continue and that customers will still be able to enjoy its beer for some time.

The brewery’s last official day of operation is set for Monday, Sept. 7.

However, this date could change if someone new takes over the business.

“The space and the brewery are for sale,” Stonehooker said. “New owners will determine the future state of the brewery.”

The company indicated it won’t host any events after Sept. 7 unless ownership changes hands.

In the meantime, customers can still visit and buy Stonehooker beer through its retail shop. The brewery assures that its beer will remain available at convenience stores, grocery stores, the LCBO, The Beer Store, pubs, and restaurants.

Currently, Stonehooker offers a variety of craft beers including Broad Reach, Sou’wester, and Light House Lager. Its selection features numerous ales and lagers ranging from IPAs to stouts as well as hefeweizens and porters.

The brewery opened to patrons in 2019 following an extensive development process. When Stonehooker began preparations to open, it was recognized as only Mississauga’s second brewery after Old Credit Brewing.

Founded by Ross Noel who remains its owner today, Stonehooker was built around Mississauga’s waterfront heritage.

The name Stonehooker refers to schooners that used to operate along Lake Ontario’s north shore. These stonehookers would sail into shallow waters with hooks to gather stones from the lakebed before transporting them to Toronto for construction purposes.

Port Credit was one of many areas where stonehooking thrived which makes this name especially fitting for a nearby brewery.

Stonehooker embraced this history in both its branding and taproom design which reflects a nautical theme marketed as a place where patrons could unwind with a pint after work.

Additionally, it has become popular for live music events, food offerings, community meetups, and outdoor activities. Currently listed on their website is a summer schedule featuring tribute bands alongside live music events and open mic nights among others.

This announcement has stirred mixed feelings among craft beer lovers online.

On Reddit’s Toronto craft beer forum discussing the closure some users voiced disappointment about losing yet another local spot while others shared critical feedback based on their experiences at Stonehooker. One commenter noted that they saw great potential in both location and patio hoping someone might take over soon.

Stonehooker’s message does leave room for hope suggesting that there may be opportunities ahead if new ownership steps in.

“The opportunity is here for new ownership to grow the business again and keep the brewery space alive for all to enjoy,”said company representatives.

For now, we’re counting down toward Sept. 7.
