The origins of Thanksgiving come from Indigenous Peoples across the land who celebrated the harvest and abundance of the earth.

When Europeans arrived, they introduced their own harvest traditions, which gradually mixed with Indigenous practices.

One of the first recorded Thanksgivings took place in 1578 by explorer Martin Frobisher in what is now Nunavut, as a way to give thanks for his safe return from an unsuccessful quest for the Northwest Passage.

In 1879, Canada officially recognized Thanksgiving as a national holiday, although it was celebrated on different days over time. It wasn’t until 1957 that Thanksgiving was officially designated as the second Monday in October.
