Remembering Eva Olsson

Eva passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. She is survived by her son, Jan (Alison), her grandchildren Brenna, Rudy (Natalie) and Alexandra, Rudy’s daughter Josephine and step-grandchildren Emily and Claire Standfield.

Eva Olsson (née Malek) was born on October 28, 1924, in Satu Mare, a city on the border of Hungary and Romania in Northern Transylvania. Eva and her five siblings grew up in a Hasidic household. In May of 1944, Eva and her family were taken to Auschwitz-Birkenau. From there, she was sent to forced labour camps and later moved to Bergen-Belsen, where British soldiers eventually liberated her. She and her younger sister were the only ones from their family who survived the Holocaust.

After being released from the camps and spending some months in a hospital for care, Eva decided to move to Sweden. There she met the love of her life, Rudy Olsson. They got married and took a trip to Canada in 1951. After a short visit, they chose to settle down in Canada for a fresh start. Rudy loved Canada since it reminded him of his homeland’s climate and geography. Canadians welcomed newcomers warmly-a quality that Eva often highlighted. The couple enjoyed camping and fishing with friends; Eva’s love for nature remained strong throughout her life.

Eva became pregnant with twins and gave birth to her son Jan Eric in Montreal in 1954. Sadly, they learned that Jan’s sister had passed away just before his arrival. Following Jan’s birth, Rudy’s job transfer prompted them to move to Toronto. A year later they settled down in Richmond Hill where they built their lives together as a family while raising Jan.

Eva embraced the role of homemaker with passion. She loved cooking and was famous among neighbors for sharing Swedish and Hungarian dishes with other women on their street who became friends over time. One special friendship formed during this period was with Jackie Doran; they stayed best friends for sixty-seven years until Jackie’s passing.

In February 1962 tragedy struck when Rudy was hit by a drunk driver during his commute home from work; he ultimately succumbed to his injuries from the accident months later. At that point Jan was only ten years old; Eva faced significant challenges supporting him alone but managed part-time work despite not having formal schooling while keeping their home running smoothly.

Throughout Jan’s growing-up years she instilled values of compassion and trust within him while also acting as mentor or second mother figure to many of his friends who often gathered at the Olsson kitchen sampling delicious European treats prepared by Eva as they chatted about various topics.

Driven by her love for nature again led Eva purchase waterfront property near Huntsville where she collaborated with Jan building modest cottage together-this experience encouraged selling family house back Richmond Hill moving instead Bracebridge around 1982 before first grandchild arrived: Brenna followed soon after by Rudy then Alexandra subsequently. Her focus shifted towards grandchildren now calling Bubba.

The following twenty-five years revolved around providing childcare along teaching them skills like cooking/baking amidst wonderful adventures exploring gardens always filled wonderment dating back even earlier days lived Richmond Hill! Large garden Bracebridge wasn’t small endeavor either-hours spent tending plants meant enjoying organic vegetable harvests created happy memories shared amongst all involved!

An important moment occurred when oldest granddaughter asked Bubba give presentation about war class Grade eight-it marked turning point since until then hadn’t discussed concentration camp experiences openly-presentation made profound impact students leading requests speaking engagements other schools across Ontario! Within few months word spread province regarding influence these talks began elevating recognition way beyond expectations!

Suddenly starting seventy-one embarking journey turned into life mission lasting ninety-seventh birthday: over twenty-six years recorded more than four thousand six hundred presentations reaching upwards one million five hundred thousand people across schools organizations community groups alike! This prolific speaker held transformative ability change lives especially those younger generations-wrote three bestselling books including autobiography Unlocking Doors: Woman’s Struggle Against Intolerance which claimed Canadian bestseller status five times! Among numerous awards accolades received towns cities communities throughout nation notable honors included three honorary doctorates plus Order Ontario alongside prestigious Order Canada!

Eagerly maintained connections friendships formed via tours many educators championed compassion acceptance resonated strongly through message entrusted upon them all-all vital support provided closest kin towards final moments youngest granddaughter watched over proudly named Alexandra whom adored fiercely till very end.

The Red Cross nursed Eva back to health after liberation and organized her immigration to Sweden.
