As of the latest update released Tuesday night by Ontario’s Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES), there are currently 110 wildfires active in northwestern Ontario.
Among these fires, 11 are classified as not under control, six are being contained, 10 are under control, and the remainder are being monitored.
On Tuesday evening, five new fires were reported in the northwest region:
Thunder Bay 79 (THU079) is situated near Dog Lake, approximately 18 kilometres west of Highway 527. This fire covers an area of 0.1 hectares and is under control. Thunder Bay 80 (THU080) is found south of Athelstane Lake, about 24 kilometres west of Highway 17. This fire also spans 0.1 hectares but remains uncontrolled. Fort Frances 65 (FOR065) can be found in Quetico Park near Baird Lake, roughly three kilometres southeast of Mc Dougall Lake. It measures 0.3 hectares and is being contained. Kenora 29 (KEN029) is located south of Moth Lake, around two kilometres south of Highway 17. This fire extends over an area of 1.5 hectares and is not under control. Dryden 62 (DRY062) is on an island in Sturgeon Lake near East Bay; this fire occupies a space of just 0.1 hectares and is under control.
The forest fire risk level varies from low to moderate throughout most parts of northwestern Ontario; however, several areas especially in the southwestern section-including around Thunder Bay, Kenora, and Dryden-are experiencing higher hazards.
“In the last month, Ontario has been facing several complex fires particularly in the Quetico area along the Canada-U. S. border and Wabakimi north of Lake Nipigon due to a significant lightning storm that swept through,” stated Mike Harris, Minister of Natural Resources during a press conference on Tuesday.
Harris also noted that crews, pilots, emergency responders, and support staff have been dedicated to ensuring public safety.
“There are more than 150 firefighting crews from Ontario supported by nearly 100 aircraft including over 80 helicopters and water bombers working together with partners across Canada and North America,” he mentioned.
He added that over the next few days or weeks some partners will likely start moving their resources back home-some have already returned to Alberta while others have been repositioned to British Columbia.
