A once expansive area of farmland in the southeastern region of St. Thomas, Ont. is quickly becoming one of Canada’s largest industrial construction efforts.

The location will soon host a groundbreaking $7-billion electric vehicle gigafactory being built by Power Co. It will stand as Canada’s biggest EV battery manufacturing plant and the company’s first battery-cell facility outside of Europe.

As of now, the changes on-site are increasingly visible. The foundation work is progressing rapidly through late 2025, and the project has advanced to vertical construction. Teams are putting up enormous steel s, beams, and trusses for the battery-cell production facility and other buildings.

Frank Blome, CEO of Power Co SE, mentioned in a statement that the company aims to establish itself as a global leader in battery production with a strong presence in both Europe and North America.

Covering 1.5 million square feet, the factory is comparable to 210 football fields just for its footprint alone. The entire industrial park spans 1,500 acres or about 850 football fields altogether.

There are currently hundreds of skilled workers on site. Once finished, the gigafactory will include six separate production blocks.

The scale of construction materials involved underscores this project’s massive size. Magil Construction Canada is overseeing foundation work for three key buildings totaling 850,000 square feet. The foundation package alone consists of over 500,000 square feet of formwork, more than 32,000 cubic meters of concrete and 4,850 metric tonnes of reinforcing steel.

To visualize these figures better, the volume of concrete used would fill approximately 13 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The rebar installation ranks among the largest publicly reported efforts for an industrial project in southwestern Ontario.

The Canadian contractor Steelcon Group of Companies is responsible for fabricating and assembling structural steel parts such as s, beams and roof trusses. More than 500 employees from Steelcon are engaged in fabrication and erection tasks.

This work involves meticulous coordination. Concrete teams lay down foundational systems before steel erectors raise up building frameworks. In due time, exterior cladding, roofing systems, mechanical installations along with electrical infrastructure will be added alongside sophisticated equipment for battery manufacturing prior to commencing production.

This gigafactory comes as a result of a significant agreement made public in April 2023 between Volkswagen Group-Europe’s leading automaker-Power Co and government entities at federal, provincial and municipal levels. Founded by Volkswagen in 2022, Power Co aims to spearhead advancements in global battery cell production.

Once operational, the St. Thomas gigafactory St. Thomas Battery Cell Manufacturing Plant – EV Battery Plant Status Under Construction Value$7BLocation800 Talbot St , St Thomas ONSector Private Type Manufacturing · New Construction Data as of July 24 , 2026View Project Page → will introduce Power Co’s cutting-edge Unified Cell battery technology to Canada.

The facility is expected to eventually generate up to 90 gigawatt-hours of battery cells each year-which could power around one million electric vehicles annually.

Even though there has been substantial progress so far, a lot remains to be done.

The construction crews need to finalize structural frameworks across several production facilities along with support structures throughout the site. Next steps involve installing mechanical, electrical , and process systems followed by commissioning tests on equipment used for battery production. Recruitment efforts must also persist as preparations ramp up toward operations at this new facility.

Ultimately , the plant should provide jobs directly for roughly 3 ,000 workers while supporting around 30 ,000 additional positions through suppliers logistics companies plus other enterprises scattered across southwestern Ontario.

Hiring processes have already begun with over 200 employees onboarded by early 2026.

According to Power Co, the project continues its planned progression aiming towards initial battery output slated for 2027.

Similar endeavors at this scale often encounter hurdles.

One major challenge has been working through tough winter conditions. Construction teams have had steel erection plus structural tasks carried out even amidst challenging weather which demanded precise planning coupled with coordinated efforts among contractors. Despite those circumstances crews successfully erected initial significant steel structures thereby maintaining overall momentum during construction.

Another issue arises from coordinating extensive foundation packages themselves. Managing placement involving tens thousands cubic meters worth concrete alongside thousands tons reinforcing steel across three principal buildings has called upon thorough logistical arrangements scheduling along quality controls needed throughout.

This undertaking also necessitated mobilizing large skilled-trades workforce whilst simultaneously developing necessary infrastructure services required catering towards expansive locations. Road enhancements near Highway three utility upgrades transportation improvements have been initiated facilitating both ongoing activities together long-term operations found within plant.

The Volkswagen Group intends introducing upwards twenty-five new electric vehicle models before reaching two-thousand thirty. Beyond supplying batteries aimed towards next generation electric cars, this venture anticipates boosting development within London-St. Thomast area acting as cornerstone establishing broader EV supply chains spread throughout southwestern Ontario drawing attention supplier networks providing material components logistics advanced manufacturing sectors located nearby.
