A special weather statement has been issued for thunderstorms, funnel clouds, and possible landspout tornadoes in parts of southwestern Ontario.

On Saturday afternoon, conditions are right for the formation of funnel clouds in the Chatham-Kent and Sarnia regions, according to a weather alert from Environment and Climate Change Canada.

The alert was later broadened to cover London, Parkhill, Eastern Middlesex County, St. Thomas, Aylmer, and Eastern Elgin County.

Thunderstorms moving through these areas could produce funnel clouds.

These funnel clouds are formed by weak rotation beneath quickly developing clouds or minor thunderstorms, as stated by Environment Canada in the alert.

This weak rotation usually poses no threat near the ground. However, there is a possibility that this rotation could strengthen into a weak landspout tornado, according to the alert.

Landspout tornadoes typically don’t cause major damage but can still be hazardous. They may be strong enough to uproot trees, harm roofs, or throw debris short distances.

Wind gusts reaching up to 70 km/h are also anticipated.
